The Project Repository

What is a Project Repository?

The project repository is the central collection of all relevant project information. Also called a project notebook, the repository can exist in electronic or paper format.

Typical documents contained in the project repository include:

  • Project charter
  • Project plan
  • Change requests
  • Issues logs
  • Relevant contracts
  • Status reports

Where Should the Project Repository Be Stored?

During the project, core team members need access to the project repository. Since the repository is their source for the most current project information, it needs to be centrally located.

After the project is complete, the project repository should be made available for future project teams to reference. You can also use it as a standard for documentation of future projects.

Who Is Responsible for the Project Repository?

Most often, the project manager is responsible for maintaining the project repository. Regardless of who produces project documents, the project manager adds them to the repository as they are published.
